Master Cooling began her martial arts training in 1979 and currently holds the rank of 7th degree black belt.  Over the years she was awarded the Female Instructor of the Year and Spirit of Isshin-Ryu awards from the international Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame, as well as being inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2003. For over 21 years, she was a strong competitor in tournaments on the east coast, consistently placing in the top three spots for kata, weapons kata, and sparring.

In 1999 she opened a dojo in Gardnerville, NV and for many years was the only female chief instructor in northern Nevada

Diane was the featured instructor at the Women’s Self-Defense Expo in Princeton, IL for 2006 and 2007. She is a certified defensive tactics instructor, and recently earned black belt ranking in Presas Arnis. She currently serves as vice president of the Order of Isshin-Ryu organization.

She served the community locally as an operations leader for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue team, earning certifications as an EMT-Basic and POST Investigative Mantracker.  She is also a 2005 graduate of Leadership Douglas County.

Diane handed her dojo down to one of her students in 2010 when her husband became ill. As his health improved, she’s been able to travel more to attend workshops and seminars for many different aspects of the martial arts.  She says, “My goal now is to include more weapon training in my studies. The older I get, the more I want to be able to rely on firearms, long and short knives, and everyday items for defense rather than only my hands and feet. I don’t want to get too comfortable in what I know, and this will keep me striving to improve.”
