SEISAN KATA

"THREE FRONTS"

              The name "Seisan" literally means "Three Fronts", due to the fact that everything is done in sets of threes.  Seisan Kata is found in several styles of karate, including Kobayashi-Ryu, Shobayashi-Ryu and Matsubayashi-Ryu, which are the three main branches of the Shorin-Ryu style.  It is from the Shorin-Ryu Master Kiyan that Master Shimabuku was taught the form.  Legend states that there was a Chinese master by the name of Seisan, however, little is known by Karate historians about the man.

              Prior to 1903, Seisan was the first kata taught to Karate students in Okinawa.  After that time, Masters Chotoku Kiyan and Itosu Yasutrsune introduced the Pinan and Taikyoku Kata prior to the teaching of the more advanced kata.  Master Shimabuku kept with tradition and taught the Seisan kata first, a practice still adhered to by most Isshin-Ryu instructors.  Some Isshin-Ryu instructions do teach the Taikyoku forms, but these are primarily stepping drills used to introduce proper stepping, blocking and punching skills.

 

 SEISAN KATA   (SEQUENCE/BUNKAI)

              The following outline is the sequence/bunkai of the Isshin-Ryu version of the Seisan Kata.  Two interpretations will be given where applicable.  (A) Will be the basic bunkai and (B) the intermediate or advanced bunkai.  There are other bunkai for the movements of the kata, but they will not be listed here, as such interpretation depends on the student's level of understanding and his own research.  

 

 OPENING

              Stand at attention, the heels are together with toes pointed at a 45-degree angle.  The spine is straight (including the neck) with the knees slightly bent.  The hands are open with the palms against the thighs (fingers point toward the ground).  Relax by taking a few deep breaths utilizing the diaphragm and set the mind toward the purpose of concentrating on the kata.  Perform the Tachi-Rei (standing bow).  Bend from the waist to a 45 degree angle; do not take the eyes off of the opponent and do not show the back of the neck (this is a form of disrespect); straighten back up to the original position.   Bring the right fist up to the solar plexus (the palm part of the right hand will be facing your chest) and the left hand will simultaneously cover the front of the right fist as thought you are hiding the fist behind the left hand (the left hand is in a shuto position and the palm will be facing your chest with the fingers pointing up).  Lower the hands to in front of the groin (turning the knuckles of the right hand in the palm of the left).  As the hands are lowered, pivot the feet inward to a pigeon-toed stance with the knees slightly touching together (this is a cover for the groin against possible attacks at that level). 

 

 OPENING MOVE

  1.         Step with the right foot into a Kiba-Dachi (horse stance), (feet are parallel and are shoulder width apart with the toes pointing straight ahead and the knees bent).  As the stance is being assumed, cross the hands (left over right, hands closed in fists) in front of the solar plexus and perform double low-level blocks (the hands stop in front of the thighs just above the knees).  

(A)       The opponents on the right (MIGI) and left (HIDARI) have attacked with front kicks (MAE GERI) and the down blocks are performed with the right and left hands.

(B)       The opponent is grabbing at or has grabbed your top.  You bring your hands up and using a down block motion tear his grip lose.

 

    SERIES NUMBER 1

1.         Step with the left foot into a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a left-hand-outside block and then immediately execute a right-hand-vertical punch.  

(A)       The opponent has attacked with a right-hand punch.  Your left hand blocks the punch and a right-hand-vertical punch is delivered to the solar plexus of the opponent.  

(B)       The opponent has attacked with a left-hand punch.  You catch the punch with the right hand and break the opponent's arm with the block or you strike him in the face with a left-hand backfist.  You then follow up with a right-hand-vertical punch to the solar plexus of the second opponent while the first opponent is controlled by the arm/elbow break.  

2.         Step forward with the right foot into a right-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi while simultaneously performing a left-hand-vertical punch.  

(A)       You have hit the first opponent and are driving him backward with the step and punch.  

(B)       You step around the first attacker with the right foot and hit the third with a left-hand-vertical punch.  The step may act as a sweep to the second opponent.  (The first opponent is pushed away as the step is made.)  

3.         Step with the left foot to a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi, simultaneously performing a right-hand vertical punch.  

(A)       The opponent is driven back with the previous two punches and has managed to block these punches.  The third punch finally hits him.  

(B)       The third opponent is swept by the left foot and a fourth opponent is punched.

 

FINISHING MOVE OF SERIES NUMBER 1

1.         After the last right-hand-vertical punch, step-shuffle forward at a 45 degree angle, maintaining the left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously performing a double wedge block with the left hand being slightly above the right (to avoid the hands being jammed together).   

(A)       This is a blocking action against two overhead attacks from two opponents at the right and left forward angles.  

(B)       During the slide step, the overhead wedge block is used to catch or trap a downward strike from the opponent. (This technique can be used against either arm).  After trapping the arm maintain control by holding the wrist and extending the arm just above head level.  

** Note: The step is performed in the following manner:

The left foot steps off on the 45-degree angle and the right foot slides up behind maintaining the Seisan-Dachi. 

2.         Pivot 135 degrees on the ball of the left foot and assume a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi (you now will be facing the starting point of the kata).  As you are assuming the stance, simultaneously strike downward with two shutos (right and left hand).  The left hand stops just in front of the left leg and the right stops just behind the right leg. 

(A)       Perform double shuto strikes to the groin of both opponent's that you encountered in the last move. 

(B)       Pull the trapped arm down over your right shoulder, applying pressure to the opponent's elbow (whichever arm you trapped, pull it over the right shoulder).  While breaking the trapped arm at the elbow, strike with your free hand to the opponent's groin with a shuto.  

 

SERIES NUMBER 2

1.         Step with your right foot into a right-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a right-hand-outside ridgehand block (the hand is in a palm up position) and a left-hand-downward shuto stopping just behind the left leg (the palm will be facing the leg).  Bring your right hand in across your body and strike straight out with a shuto (palm down).  Pull the shuto down to your right hip.  

(A)       The opponent to front of you throws a left-hand punch.  You perform a right hand block of the punch and your left hand acts as a back up cover.  You then strike the opponent to the rear a second time in the groin with the left hand shuto.  The shuto strike with your right hand is a grab of the opponent's punching arm.  You then pull him out of your way by pulling the trapped arm down towards your hip.  

(B)       1) Your left hand acts as a parry and catch as the right hand breaks the arm of your opponent at the elbow.   The left hand pulls the punching hand of the attacker to the thigh to aid in the arm being broken and to unbalance him for the next move.  The left hand stays in place until the next foot movement so that you can feel the last opponent getting up, if he is able.  (At this point your left hand becomes you eyes to watch the opponent you finished off in the last move.  Remember, in a real fight a downed fighter's first instinct is to get up.)  The shuto strike with the right hand hits the opponent in the ribs.  Pull the opponent across the forward leg.  This sweeps your opponent's legs out from under him.

                2) Your opponent may bend forward when the ridge-hand block and the parry and catch apply pressure to the arm.  This may keep the arm from being broken, but he will have to give up his balance and then becomes easy to dispose of.  If the arm folds up and the opponent bends over the fingers of the blocking hand will rake the eyes.  The opponent would have to turn sideways to take the pressure of the arm, which makes him easier to sweep after the shuto to the side of the ribs.

**NOTE: As the pull is made the right hip may be rotated forward slightly to aid in power transmission, this depends on your relative size, strength, balance and stance of your opponent. 

2.         Step with you’re left foot into a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a left-hand-outside-ridgehand block (the hand is in a palm up position) and a right-hand-downward shuto stopping just behind the right leg (the palm will be facing the leg).  Bring your left hand in across your body and strike straight out with a shuto (palm down).  Pull the shuto down to your left hip.

(A)       The opponent to front of you throws a right-hand punch.  You perform a left hand block of the punch and your right hand acts as a back up cover.  You then strike the opponent to the rear a second time in the groin with a right hand shuto.  The shuto strike with your left hand is a grab of the opponent's punching arm.  You then pull him out of your way by pulling the trapped arm down towards your hip.

NOTE: The pull in all three segments of series number 2 is performed with Sanchin breathing.

 

FINISHING MOVE SERIES NUMBER 2

1.         Stack the hands (left on top of the right in a vertical fist position) on the right hip.

(A)       The stack may also act as a jamming move on a rib level technique coming from the right.

(B)       This is a hammerfist to the ribs or to the back of the neck of the last opponent, as he is pulled (swept) over your right leg.

 

SERIES NUMBER 3

1.         Look and then step 90 degrees to the left assuming a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a left-hand-outside block and immediately follow by a right-hand-vertical punch and then a left-hand-vertical punch.  Follow up with a right-foot-front kick and then a right-hand-vertical punch.  Finish this series by stacking the right hand on top of the left hand on the left hip.

(A)       Your left hand acts as a block against a right-hand punch and then you perform a right and then a left-hand-vertical punch.  The left-hand punch remains extended to hold the opponent in place so that the kick may be executed properly.  The last punch finishes him off.  A stack is performed with the right hand on top of the left on the left hip (the hands are in a vertical fist position).

(B)       After the step the left hand blocks, grabs and pulls your opponent's right punch to the left hip.  As the pull is made, twist the arm violently to the hip, thus bending the opponent over.  You then punch with the right hand to the temple area, release the hold and follow up with a left punch.  The right front kick may also be a knee strike to the opponent's face, since the arm lock first used will bend the opponent over.  If this is the case then the front kick becomes a shin kick to the groin.  Follow up with a right-hand-vertical punch to the solar plexus.  The following stack can be used to throw the opponent to your left, thus clearing your right-hand side for further movement.  This may also be a hammerfist to the back of the head or a close range punch to the ribs or kidney of the opponent.

2.         Look and then pivot 90 degrees to the right on the balls of the feet (maintain a Seisan-Dachi).

(A)       This is clearing action used to check for further opponents coming from this direction.

3.         Look and then step 90 degrees to the right assuming a right-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a right-hand-outside block and immediately follow by a left-hand-vertical punch and then a right-hand-vertical punch.  Follow up with a left-foot-front kick and then a left-hand-vertical punch.  Finish this series by stacking the left hand on top of the right hand on the right hip.

(A)       Your right hand acts as a block against a left-hand punch and then you perform a left and then a right-hand-vertical punch.  The right-hand punch remains extended to hold the opponent in place so that the kick may be executed properly.  The last punch finishes him off.  A stack is performed with the left hand on top of the right on the right hip (the hands are in a vertical fist position).

(B)       After the step the right hand blocks, grabs and pulls your opponent's right punch to the right hip.  As the pull is made, twist the arm violently to the hip, thus bending the opponent over.  You then punch with the left hand to the temple area, release the hold and follow up with a right punch.  The left front kick may also be a knee strike to the opponent's face, since the arm lock first used will bend the opponent over.  If this is the case then the front kick becomes a shin kick to the groin.  Follow up with a left-hand-vertical punch to the solar plexus.  The following stack can be used to throw the opponent to your right, thus clearing your left-hand side for further movement.  This may also be a hammerfist to the back of the head or a close range punch to the ribs or kidney of the opponent.

4.     Look and then step 90 degrees to the left assuming a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a left-hand-outside block and immediately follow by a right-hand-vertical punch and then a left-hand-vertical punch.  Follow up with a right-foot-front kick and then a right-hand-vertical punch.

(A)       Your left hand acts as a block against a right-hand punch and then you perform a right and then a left-hand-vertical punch.  The left-hand punch remains extended to hold the opponent in place so that the kick may be executed properly.

(B)       After the step the left hand blocks, grabs and pulls your opponent's right punch to the left hip.  As the pull is made, twist the arm violently to the hip, thus bending the opponent over.  You then punch with the right hand to the temple area, release the hold and follow up with a left punch.  The right front kick may also be a knee strike to the opponent's face, since the arm lock first used will bend the opponent over.  If this is the case then the front kick becomes a shin kick to the groin.  Follow up with a right-hand-vertical punch to the solar plexus.

 

SERIES NUMBER 4

1.         Your opponent has sidestepped the punch and throws his own punch.  As the punch is delivered, pivot on the balls of both feet and turn into a Kiba-Dachi on a 45-degree angle off the main kata line (do not move the left foot) and simultaneously perform a left-hand-outside block against the body punch.  

(A)       As you sidestep your opponent’s punch, you perform an outside block knocking him off balance and out of your way.

(B)       The sidestep of your opponent's punch acts as a block and causes him to over-extend as he tries to strike you.  As the punch comes by your body, grab the punch with the right hand and then pull the right hand to your right hip, thus dragging the opponent's upper body forward.  As your opponent is pulled forward you perform an outside block or backfist causing his bodyweight to shift away from his attack line.  His arm is extended across your chest allowing it to be broken over your chest as he is being knocked away from you.

2.         Step 45 degrees to the right with the left with the left foot into a right-foot-forward Neko-Ashi-Dachi and simultaneously execute a hard, re-enforced left elbow to the rear.  The right hand fist will be stacked on top of the left fist (both hands are in a vertical fist position and are at the left hip at the completion of the elbow strike).  As you step-slide with the right foot into a Kiba-Dachi simultaneously perform a right-hand-uppercut punch.  Step-slide back with the left foot to a Neko-Ashi-Dachi (right foot forward) and immediately perform a right-downward-elbow block  (in front of the right ribs).  Perform a left-over-right cross step and then perform a right-foot-front-snap kick at the groin level.  Bring the right foot forward into a Seisan-Dachi and simultaneously perform a right-down block followed by a left-hand-vertical punch.

(A)       The uppercut punch is blocked and grabbed, and the opponent counters with a front kick to your ribs.  You step back to avoid the kick and bring the elbow block down to disengage his grab and to block the kick.  The down block may also be a backfist to the groin of the opponent.  

(B)       After the initial uppercut punch is executed, it is blocked and grabbed by your opponent's cross block. Rotate your fist to a thumbs up position to weaken his grip, as this will work against his thumbs.  Snap your hand back, at the same time slide backwards into the Neko-Ashi-Dachi.  The follow up varies with the results of this technique.  If the hand is broken loose, the cross-over step will close the gap for the front kick attack.  If the hand did not break loose, and the opponent flows with your step back, the cross-over step will be a heel stomp to the opponent's instep followed by a knee strike to the midsection.  The front kick then becomes a shin kick and the down block becomes a backfist.

3.         Your opponent has sidestepped the punch and throws his own punch.  As the punch is delivered, pivot on the balls of both feet and turn into a Kiba-Dachi (do not move the left foot) on a 45 degree angle off the main kata line and simultaneously perform a right-hand-outside block against the body punch.

4.         Step 45 degree degrees to the right with the right foot into a left-foot-forward Neko-Ashi-Dachi and immediately execute a hard, re-enforced left elbow to the rear.  The left fist will be stacked on top of the right fist (both hands are in a vertical fist position and are at the right hip at the completion of the elbow strike).  As you step with the left foot into a Kiba-Dachi simultaneously perform a left-hand-uppercut punch.  Step back with the right foot to a Neko-Ashi-Dachi (left foot forward) and perform a left-downward-elbow block  (in front of the left ribs).  Perform a right-over-left cross step and then perform a left-foot-front-snap kick at the groin level.  Bring the left foot forward into a Seisan-Dachi and immediately perform a left-leg-down block followed by a right-hand-vertical punch.

 SERIES NUMBER 5

1.         Step 45 degrees to the left  with the right foot  into a left-foot-forward Neko-Ashi-Dachi and immediately execute a hard, re-enforced left elbow to the rear.  The left fist will be stacked on top of the right fist (both hands are in a vertical fist position and are at the right hip at the completion of the elbow strike).   Step with the right foot straight out into a Seiuchin-Dachi (leave the left foot in place) and immediately execute a right-hand backfist.

(A)       As the opponent approaches you step forward and strike him with a backfist.

(B)       You can see your next opponent as he punches at your head.  You step toward him and assume a Seiuchin-Dachi, which drops your body below the punch that is being delivered.  You parry the strike with an upward elbow block and then with a whip-like action you strike him with a backfist, that is an extension of the elbow block.

2.         Pivot on the left foot into a right-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and perform a right-hand-down block.  Follow up with a left- hand-vertical punch.  (A)       As your opponent moves forward you move back into a right-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and perform a right-down block.

(B)       As you finished the last opponent your next opponent approaches at a 45 degree angle and attempts to sweep the front foot of the Seiuchin-Dachi.  You shift your weight to the back foot and bring the right foot up into a front chambered position.  As you brought the right foot up to avoid the sweep, your opponent delivered a front kick to your groin area, as it appeared to be open as you switch stances.  As you bring the right leg up you block the kick with you shin and step out into the Seisan-Dachi and strike down into his leg with a backfist.

3.         Your opponent has sidestepped the punch and throws his own punch.  As the punch is delivered, pivot on the balls of both feet and turn into a Kiba-Dachi (do not move the left foot) on a 45 degree angle off the main kata line and simultaneously perform a right-hand-outside block against the body punch.

(A)       As you sidestep your opponent’s punch you perform an outside block knocking him off balance and out of your way.

(B)       The sidestep of your opponents punch acts as a block and causes him to over extend as he tries to strike you.  As the punch comes by your body you grab the punch with your left hand, pull your left hand to your left hip, thus dragging the opponent's upper body forward.  As your opponent is pulled forward you perform a right-hand-outside block or backfist causing his bodyweight to shift away from his attack line.  His arm is extended across your chest allowing it to be broken over your chest as he is being knocked away from you.

 

SERIES NUMBER 6

1.         Step back with the right foot into a left-foot-forward Neko-Ashi-Dachi (you continue to face the same direction as in series number 5) and simultaneously perform a left-outside-shuto block.  Set the left foot back on the ground and perform a right-foot-front-snap kick.  Return the kick to a left-foot-forward Seisan-Dachi and immediately perform a right-hand-vertical punch.

(A)       After you block your opponent's punch, you perform a right-front kick to his ribs.

(B)       Block your opponent's punch with the shuto block and grab the wrist, just prior to kicking.  Your opponent bends at the waist and slides he waist backward in order to evade the kick.  You twist the wrist counter clockwise to lock the shoulder of the opponent as you pull the left hand to the left hip and perform a right-hand-vertical punch to the exposed ribs.

2.         Slide back with the right foot to left-foot-forward Neko-Ashi-Dachi.  Raise the hands over the head (palms facing out in shuto) and bring them to the left and right hip.  The right hand is on the right hip above the left hand (which is on the left hip) approximately one hand span.  Bring the right hand to center line (in front of the solar plexus) and the left hand to center line just above the groin.  The hands are moved so that the left hand is above the right hand on the left hip and the right hand is in front of the groin.

(A)       This move is stepping back and clearing any potential attack to the face.  The opponent attacks the solar plexus with a front kick.  The hands grab the kick and twist the ankle so that the opponent is either thrown or his leg is broken.

(B)       You still have hold of your opponent's wrist with your left hand.  Your opponent blocked your last punch.  As he blocked you grabbed the wrist of that arm with your right hand.  You slide the left foot back into the Neko-Ashi-Dachi twisting both his arms downward causing him to bend over in front of you to keep his arms from being broken.  Grab the back of the head with the right hand and the jaw with the left, as you slide back into a Naihanci-Dachi.  Now just like turning the steering wheel of a car, turn the neck clockwise a half turn and as quickly as possible turn the opponent's neck back three quarters turn counter-clockwise to snap the opponent's neck.

 

CLOSING

            Step up with your right foot and bring the heels together with the feet at a 45 degree angle.  Bring the right fist up to the solar plexus (the palm part of the right hand will be facing your chest) and the left hand will cover the front of the right fist as thought you are hiding the fist behind the left hand (the left hand is in a shuto position and the palm will be facing your chest with the fingers pointing up).  Lower the hands to in front of the groin (turning the knuckles of the right hand in the palm of the left).  Bring the hands to the thighs (in a shuto position with the fingers pointing down).  Perform the standing bow just like in the opening.  Straighten the body and compose yourself.
